  • PRESS RELEASE

A former bus depot receives £250,000 funding boost to kick starts charities building renovation!

The government’s levelling up funding is coming to a local charity based in Heanor to kick start it’s long overdue building project.

The largest capital grant Salcare has ever received, the Community Ownership Fund helps communities protect assets that foster a sense of community pride and bring people together.

Service Director, Jacqui Bell said, “We are over the moon. Salcare acquired their building in 1977 for a small furniture donation project for local people in need. Today we have developed the services to provide a Community Café, Community Pantry & Food Bank as well as providing opportunities for all kinds of people volunteer and develop new skills. For a long time, we have felt that we achieve big things despite our building, now we can begin to build a Community Hub that’s fit for purpose and offer even more space for the hundreds of families & people that use our services.”

She went on to say, “We’ve spent the last year talking to people who use our services, as well as the wider community, finding out what they want to see in the building. Now we hope to extend our café, develop our therapeutic space and build a community creche.” “First things first though – we need to fix the roof”, she said.

Salcare has supported the growing needs of people living across the district, tackling issues around food, fuel and furniture poverty as well as providing domestic abuse support services at the same site. The overall building project involves improving its Furniture Warehouse, including creating a small workshop to build a Reuse & Repair scheme. Extending the Community Hub and cafe area to sit alongside a boutique charity shop area, will allow the charities 1000’s of visitors to browse whilst popping into the pantry. The large open plan fully accessible café & kitchen will be used for cooking demos and community eating, maximising light and even growing flowers & fruit.

The team also plan to develop the outside space as a wellbeing area with space for training, workshops and group work. The area will incorporate natural materials including plants and provide a natural setting where interventions can be delivered.

Improving the exterior appearance and heritage of the building whilst creating interior community asset spaces, the charity is aiming to create a wow factor that the community can be proud of and make it their own.

  • Salcare celebrates its fantastic volunteers.

    Volunteer celebration event

As part of #volunteersweek, Salcare is thanking its fantastic team of volunteers with a meal and celebration event provided by the staff for all our volunteers.

Jacqui Bell, Director of Service for Salcare explained ‘we couldn’t operate without our hardworking volunteers, they are a massive asset to the organisation and the services we provide. The value of volunteering is huge in our sector, in terms of the services they are able to deliver, and the experience and sense of ‘giving back’ that the volunteer can achieve. We have so many members of staff that initially started with us as volunteers, demonstrating the high value we place on experience when employing people. We’d like to give a huge thanks to all our volunteers, past and present, you are all amazing!!’

Salcare provide a range of volunteering opportunities in the Shop, Community Pantry & Café and Warehouse. If you are interested in learning more about volunteering with us, please contact us on 01773 764562 or enquiries@salcare.org.uk

    Volunteer Case study (C)

    Background

C, a single parent, was receiving support from Derbyshire Recovery Partnership (DRP) for alcohol dependency issues and, as a consequence of an emergency protection order, had lost custody of their 2 children due to the effects of their dependency. C had also been the subject of legal action around ASB whilst they were dependent.

They had high levels of anxiety and low self-esteem and were worried that they may go back to previous coping strategies through alcohol.

    C. attends the 12 steps of AA with Alcoholics Anonymous regularly.

How did you come to volunteer?

DRP suggested that C should look for other activities that would be positive and steer them away from risky coping strategies by referring them to Amber Valley CVS for volunteering opportunities, which resulted in an introduction to Salcare. C was introduced to the volunteer team at Salcare and felt they could take on a role in the community café, preparing and delivering a café menu 3 days per week.

    How has volunteering helped you?

‘I’ve made some big steps to building a new life so I can get my kids back.

Volunteering with Salcare is amazing, I feel safe and all the people at Salcare are so open, honest and non-judgmental at my background. I feel more confident to make a new start and stay drink free, I have made some new great friends and a sponsor for my AA sessions.  I even got some new qualifications that can help me find work in the future.’

    C. has also accessed support through our ‘Move-on’ group (wellness after abuse peer support workshop) and support with her legal case through Salcare McKenzie Friends service (legal support) and support with accessing their benefits and essential food through our community pantry.

    WHAT IS VOLUNTEERS’ WEEK?

Volunteers Week takes place 1-7 June every year. It’s a chance to recognise the fantastic contribution volunteers make to our communities and say thank you. Volunteers’ Week is supported and celebrated by small grassroots organisations as well as larger, household-name charities. Together they run hundreds of activities across the UK, which showcase and celebrate volunteers and their contribution to our communities. Volunteers’ Week 2023 is a time to celebrate and inspire. We aim to highlight that our diversity is our strength, show that there’s more than one way to volunteer and encourage people to be the change that we want to see.

  • Mental Health Awareness Week

    We’re proud to be supporting #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek – May15 to 21. The theme of this year’s #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek is anxiety #ToHelpMyAnxiety

Anxiety is a normal emotion in us all, but sometimes it can get out of control and become a mental health problem.

Lots of things can lead to feelings of anxiety, including exam pressures, relationships, starting a new job (or losing one) or other big life events. We can also get anxious when it comes to things to do with money and not being able to meet our basic needs, like heating our home or buying food.

Here’s some tips on dealing with #ToHelpMyAnxiety 👇

A new job opportunity at Salcare

Thanks to DCC’s Derbyshire Grants Programme we’re delighted to be recruiting a new part-time Community Hub Development Worker.

Our vision is to create a Community Hub, fit for purpose and addressing directly the critical needs of our local community at a critical time.

The job will lead a project to repurpose our community centre, making a transitional change to the way we deliver services to better support the increasing needs of our community through a different, more person-centred approach to issues such as skills for work through volunteering, healthy living, food and fuel poverty, isolation and help support low level mental health (MH) issues. We also want to build up front line service capacity through a team of trained volunteers.

Specifically the role will co-ordinate and promote services and facilities of our Community Hub.

A full job description is attached but the principal responsibilities include:

    • Plan and co-ordinate all services of the community hub (currently Café/Pantry/Foodbank/partner services)
    • To explore other services that support the local community
    • Work with partners to deliver further service in the hub
    • Co-ordinate staffing of all services
    • Recruit, train and mentor volunteers to support the hub services
    • Deliver a development programme for all volunteers including specific roles and potential qualifications
    • Organise and promote delivery of intervention programmes around the needs of the community (Cooking lessons/meal clubs/partner groups)

The deadline for applications is 9:00 Monday 24th October, via the Application Form attached. Completed forms should be sent to don.davis@salcare.org.uk. For an informal chat about the role please contact Don via email to arrange a time.

  • Salcare launch Community Pantry in Heanor

People in Heanor will be able to save on their weekly shopping bills, thanks to a new project that opens this week.

With the help of the Feeding Derbyshire Partnership, local charity Salcare has grown its food project into a community pantry, to be run and used by local people and will be officially launched at an event on 1st September from their community centre on Ray Street, Heanor.

The Community Pantry will improve household food security and free up more money for other essential household costs such as rent and utilities offering a nutritious weekly food shop for families and individuals that may be struggling to cover all the bills during the cost-of-living crisis.

A balanced weekly shop will be provided at a hugely discounted price to people that need it. They will be able to join the Community Pantry for a small (affordable) fee and access groceries based on paying ‘what they can afford.’ So far, 50 members have signed up so far, and the charity’s director, Jacqui Bell, expects that to rise over the coming months.

Jacqui Bell, Director of Services at Salcare said “we already provide free food parcels for families that are referred to us through our foodbank, but there is a larger community of people and families ‘just about coping’, that with rising fuel and food prices, are really struggling. We want to be able to help those working families and other vulnerable individuals by providing good quality food at a very affordable price, so they become self-reliant and avoid going hungry or cold. This is part of our re-focus on addressing some of the emerging issues we are seeing in the community around food and fuel poverty and isolation.”

Opening in August, the pantry will be open every weekday from 930-2.30 pm, people wanting to join the scheme can contact Salcare, either in person on Ray Street or by contacting them on 01773 764562 or shop@salcare.org.uk
