  • Salcare launch Community Pantry in Heanor

People in Heanor will be able to save on their weekly shopping bills, thanks to a new project that opens this week.

With the help of the Feeding Derbyshire Partnership, local charity Salcare has grown its food project into a community pantry, to be run and used by local people and will be officially launched at an event on 1st September from their community centre on Ray Street, Heanor.

The Community Pantry will improve household food security and free up more money for other essential household costs such as rent and utilities offering a nutritious weekly food shop for families and individuals that may be struggling to cover all the bills during the cost-of-living crisis.

A balanced weekly shop will be provided at a hugely discounted price to people that need it. They will be able to join the Community Pantry for a small (affordable) fee and access groceries based on paying ‘what they can afford.’ So far, 50 members have signed up so far, and the charity’s director, Jacqui Bell, expects that to rise over the coming months.

Jacqui Bell, Director of Services at Salcare said “we already provide free food parcels for families that are referred to us through our foodbank, but there is a larger community of people and families ‘just about coping’, that with rising fuel and food prices, are really struggling. We want to be able to help those working families and other vulnerable individuals by providing good quality food at a very affordable price, so they become self-reliant and avoid going hungry or cold. This is part of our re-focus on addressing some of the emerging issues we are seeing in the community around food and fuel poverty and isolation.”

Opening in August, the pantry will be open every weekday from 930-2.30 pm, people wanting to join the scheme can contact Salcare, either in person on Ray Street or by contacting them on 01773 764562 or shop@salcare.org.uk

  • Local leading charity provider, Salcare, announces awards shortlist for 2024

Salcare is due to host its annual Gala Awards at Makeney Hall Hotel in Belper on the 29th November.

Don Davis, Development Manager of the Heanor based charity, comments:

“The awards are extremely important for the charity, as they help raise awareness of the work we do here, and recognise those who support us.  With our staff being mainly volunteers, without whom we would struggle to deliver the range of important services we offer, it’s really important that we show our appreciation for everything that they do, while also recognising the businesses and partners who work with us to help us support the wider community.”

The first award aims to recognise the ‘volunteers who go above and beyond’

Each volunteer gives up valuable time to deliver front lines services which includes offering advice to helping with practical support.  The volunteers also give their time to work in the charity’s café and shop, both of which provide much needed financial assistance to the organisation, as well as the distribution warehouse, the food bank and support services.

In the running this year are:

    The Café team

    The Retail team

    The Warehouse team

Two support teams for domestic abuse victims

    The Pantry/Food Bank team

Winners of this award last year were the café team, all of whom are ex-service users, looking to give back to the charity that helped them through their own traumatic experiences.

The second award is for the ‘board member who exceeded expectations’.  All are volunteers and again, without their support and hard work, Salcare would not be able to deliver the depth and breadth of services it currently offers.  This year’s shortlist includes:

    Simon Reed, Chair

    Tony Blockley

    Jodie Cook

    Paul Jones

    Sonia Richardson

    Yassine Lamine

    Jamie Bird

The 2023 award was won by Jamie Bird, Senior Lecturer (HEA) & Art Therapist (HCPC) at the University of Derby, for his unequivocal support of the organisation.

The third award is aimed at recognising the assistance given, and the generous support received from, businesses working in the local area, in particular around the issues of food poverty and domestic abuse.

The shortlist for ‘corporate support of the year’ is:

    Ward; www.ward.com

Ward is a UK-wide metal and waste recycling business who have supported Salcare for a number of years with financial support and the recycling of unwanted clothing and cardboard.

    Warburtons; https://www.warburtons.co.uk/

Winners of last year’s award, Warburtons Family Bakers, are twice-weekly contributors of freshly baked bread to the Salcare food bank providing a unique opportunity for those in need of the food bank to get fresh, in-date bread.

    Liniar; https://www.liniar.co.uk/

A subsidiary of Quanex, Liniar is a local engineering firm and a genuine supporter of the community, who have generously donated funding for the food bank and Christmas campaigns over previous years.

    Breeze Corporate Finance Ltd; https://www.breezecf.co.uk/

Breeze Corporate Finance donate funds to Salcare, as one of its two chosen charities, through running charitable sporting events in support of the organisation.

    Gillotts Funeral Directors; https://www.gillotts.co.uk/

Gillotts Funeral Directors are a local, family run firm who have supported Salcare for a number of years, donating food and support for numerous campaigns.

The final award, aimed at recognising the importance of partnerships and support services, is ‘recognising excellence in the field’.  This year’s shortlist consists of:

    Platform Thirty1; https://www.platformthirty1.com/

A charitable organisation who use creativity to empower, so that those they work with can tackle any societal, environmental, political, personal or cultural problem that is important and impactful to them, their family and/or their community.

Salcare works with Platform Thirty1 to deliver craft sessions which have been hugely successful and for which another year’s funding has been secured.

    Citizens Advice, Derbyshire Districts; https://www.citizensadvicederbyshiredistricts.org.uk/

Citizens Advice, Derbyshire Districts runs a weekly outreach programme delivering a one-stop shop of support and advice.  The team has been working successfully with Salcare for more than three years.

    Rise Housing; https://risehouses.co.uk/

Rise Housing offers fresh starts to men and women recovering from hardships, particularly those that find themselves homeless.  Salcare work alongside Rise to provide office accommodation, support, food and advice.  The organisation is working with Rise to develop more projects for the future.

    P3; https://www.p3charity.org/

P3 (People, Potential, Possibilities) is a homeless charity based in Derbyshire, providing warm hubs for those on the streets.  Their values and commitment to the community dovetail those of Salcare, so again, they are another ideal partnership.

    Don Davis adds:

“We are extremely grateful to all those who help and support the organisation, and we’re delighted to have Finance industry specialists, TFG Capital and Evolve Business Finance as two of our sponsors this year.  We still have availability should any other organisation be interested in supporting this year’s awards.”

The black-tie awards provides an ideal opportunity for people to mix and mingle at a sparkling drinks reception followed by dinner, the awards and entertainment in the form of live music, a DJ and dancing.  Anyone interested, should get in touch.
